The Apple AirPods 5 are the fifth-generation Apple open-ear (stem-design) earbuds, introduced in September 2026 — the first generation in which Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is standard across the entire AirPods line rather than a premium tier feature. The MKFW4 is the standard configuration with the USB-C Charging Case (no wireless charging). The upgrade from AirPods 4 with ANC is primarily in ANC performance: AirPods 5 remove up to 50% more external noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC, enabled by a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio algorithms running on the Apple H2 chip.

The Apple H2 chip is Apple’s dedicated headphone silicon — developed specifically for AirPods and not shared with iPhones or Macs — and handles the computational audio workload that enables ANC, Adaptive Audio, Adaptive EQ, spatial audio processing, voice isolation and Conversation Awareness simultaneously in real time, at the power consumption levels that allow multi-hour battery life in an earbud weighing 4.3 grams. H2 is the same chip architecture introduced in AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2, here driving the next generation of ANC with improved algorithms.

Active Noise Cancellation in AirPods 5 uses the microphone array, inward-facing microphone and computational audio to continuously sample incoming sound, generate an inverted anti-noise signal and cancel external noise before it reaches the ear canal — all in real time, continuously adjusted. The key distinction of AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4 with ANC: the new multiport acoustic architecture changes the physical path of sound through the earbud housing, allowing the ANC system to sample and cancel from more angles and reduce noise by 50% more than the previous design. Transparency Mode uses the microphones to pass environmental sound through the earbuds in a natural, processed way, so the listener remains aware of surroundings, voices and ambient sound without removing the earbuds. Adaptive Audio combines ANC and Transparency intelligently, automatically blending between them based on real-time environmental analysis — in a quiet office ANC runs fully, in a busy street with frequent interaction Adaptive Audio shifts toward Transparency.

Conversation Awareness detects when the wearer begins speaking and automatically lowers media volume and shifts to Transparency mode to make the conversation audible, then returns to the previous listening mode when the conversation ends — without any manual intervention. Voice Isolation separates the wearer’s voice from background noise during calls and Siri interactions for cleaner microphone pickup. Live Translation is new in AirPods 5 — using Apple Intelligence on a paired compatible iPhone, it provides real-time spoken translation through the earbuds during conversations, allowing communication across languages with AirPods acting as the audio bridge.

Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking creates a three-dimensional audio soundstage that tracks head movements to keep the perceived sound anchored in space — so as the listener turns their head, the audio field adjusts to maintain the impression that sound is coming from a fixed location (the screen of the iPhone or TV being watched). A personal profile is created using the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera for ear shape analysis, calibrating the spatial audio to the listener’s individual anatomy.

Adaptive EQ adjusts the frequency response of the audio in real time based on how the earbuds are fitting and sealing in the ear at any given moment — compensating for variations in ear tip position, earwax occlusion or ear canal shape changes to maintain consistent tonal balance throughout a listening session.

Controls: Force sensor on the stem for play/pause/call management, skip forward (2 presses), skip back (3 presses), switch listening modes (press and hold). Siri by voice (“Hey Siri” or just “Siri”). Siri Interactions: nod yes / shake head no to respond to Siri prompts hands-free. Camera remote (single press).
