The Smeg EGF03PBEU is a fully manual espresso machine with an integrated conical burr grinder, dressed in the brand’s iconic pastel blue glossy die-cast aluminium body in the 50’s Style aesthetic. It is the machine that combines Smeg’s design language with a genuine barista workflow in one countertop unit — grinding fresh beans, pre-infusing, extracting at 20 bar and steaming milk with a professional wand, all under the user’s direct control rather than delegated to an automatic programme.
Built-in conical burr grinder is the foundation of the EGF03’s coffee quality claim. The difference between grinding beans immediately before extraction and using pre-ground coffee is significant in espresso: coffee begins losing volatile aromatic compounds within minutes of grinding, and espresso extraction at 20 bar amplifies both the desirable and undesirable compounds present in the coffee at the time of extraction. The EGF03’s stainless steel conical burrs offer 15 macro grinding levels across three zones — Superfine, Fine and Medium — and the grind size is adjustable by rotating the bean hopper directly. The bean hopper holds 250g and uses a Twist & Lock system for removal; the upper burr is removable for cleaning. Grind quantity is customisable per dose, and the machine dispenses directly into the portafilter for single or double portions.
Double thermoblock heating system is the technology that resolves the waiting-time problem of single-thermoblock machines. A single thermoblock must either cool down after brewing to a temperature safe for steaming without burning milk, or heat up after steaming to reach the precise brewing temperature — either way, the user waits. The EGF03 uses two separate thermoblocks: one dedicated to the coffee brewing circuit (20 bar pump pressure, temperature settable across 4 levels — Low / Medium / Optimal / High) and one dedicated to the steam circuit (15 bar pump pressure, 2 steam intensity levels). Both are available simultaneously with no switching time, allowing the user to pull a shot and steam milk in immediate succession as a bar barista would.
Pre-infusion is the process of briefly wetting the coffee puck with low-pressure water before the full extraction pressure is applied — softening the compressed coffee bed evenly so that the 20 bar extraction meets uniform resistance rather than channelling through weak spots, which produces over- and under-extracted areas in the same shot. The EGF03 offers 4 pre-infusion profiles — Short, Standard, Long and Progressive — giving the user control over how aggressively the puck is pre-wetted depending on the roast level and grind size of the coffee being used. Combined with 4 extraction temperature levels, these settings allow the machine to be tuned to the specific characteristics of different beans rather than applying a fixed universal programme.
The 58mm professional portafilter is the bar-standard basket diameter — the same size used in commercial espresso machines — which accepts both pressurised (double-wall) filters for forgiving extraction and non-pressurised (single-wall) filters for precision espresso work. The kit includes all four filter types: single-wall 1-cup, single-wall 2-cup, double-wall 1-cup and double-wall 2-cup. The integrated pressure gauge displays extraction pressure in real time during the shot — the primary visible indicator of whether the grind, dose and tamping are producing correct extraction (target range approximately 9 bar during active extraction). The passive cup warmer on top of the machine pre-heats espresso cups using residual heat from the machine body. Stand-by mode activates at 10, 30, 40 or 60 minutes of inactivity and consumes 0.4W in off mode.
